Do I Need an Engineer for a Deck?
You generally do not need a structural engineer for a standard residential deck built to the prescriptive provisions of the building code (IRC Section R507). You need an engineer when the deck is elevated more than a story, supports a roof or hot tub, uses non-standard framing, cantilevers unusually far, or sits on steep slopes or poor soils. Many jurisdictions still require stamped plans for any deck over a threshold height.

When prescriptive design is enough
A ground-level or single-story deck with standard joist spans, code-compliant ledger attachment, and normal footings can be permitted with prescriptive drawings — many cities even publish standard deck detail sheets you can submit directly. The ledger connection to the house is the most critical detail and the most common failure point; flashing and proper lag or through-bolt attachment per code is non-negotiable.
When engineering is required
Hire an engineer for decks supporting hot tubs or spas (enormous concentrated loads), rooftop decks, decks more than one story above grade, freestanding decks on hillsides, decks with long cantilevers or unusual geometry, and any deck where the ledger cannot be attached to solid house framing (stucco over foam, brick veneer, or ICF walls all need engineered attachment solutions).
What the engineer provides
Deck engineering typically runs $800-$2,500 and includes a framing plan, footing schedule, ledger attachment details, lateral bracing design, and calculations. For hot tub decks, the engineer sizes joists and beams for the filled weight of the tub plus occupants — often 100+ psf versus the standard 40 psf residential deck load. Turnaround is usually 1-2 weeks.
The bottom line
Standard single-story decks can go prescriptive. Get an engineer for hot tubs, rooftop decks, hillsides, or any non-standard framing — deck collapses are almost always a connection or footing failure.
