How Much Does a Data Center Cost to Engineer?

Engineering for a data center typically costs $1,000,000 to $10,000,000+, depending on capacity (MW), tier level, and redundancy. Data centers are the most MEP-intensive building type in commercial construction: enormous electrical distribution with N+1 or 2N redundancy, precision cooling at massive scale, and structural design for heavy floor loads and vibration. Expect engineering at 10-15% of construction on large facilities.

Electrical: the dominant discipline

Utility service at tens of megawatts, medium-voltage distribution, UPS systems (battery or flywheel) for ride-through, diesel generators in N+1 or 2N configurations with days of fuel storage, and power distribution down to every rack. The electrical engineer designs for concurrent maintainability — any component serviceable without dropping load. Short-circuit, arc-flash, and selective coordination studies are full-scope deliverables, not extras.

Mechanical cooling at scale

Data halls reject enormous heat continuously: chilled-water plants with waterside economizers, CRAH/CRAC units, hot-aisle/cold-aisle containment, and increasingly direct liquid cooling for high-density racks. PUE (power usage effectiveness) is the design metric owners watch — every tenth of a point is real money at scale. Redundancy matches the electrical tier: cooling must survive the same failures power does.

Structural and site

Floor loads of 250-500+ psf in data halls, vibration criteria for sensitive equipment, and often seismic Risk Category IV (essential facility) design. The site needs dual utility feeds from separate substations where available, massive fuel storage with environmental compliance, and security-driven site design. Commissioning (Levels 1-5, including integrated systems testing) is a major scope item — data centers do not open without it.

The bottom line

Budget $1M-$10M+ for data center engineering — electrical redundancy and precision cooling dominate. Design for the tier level's concurrent maintainability and commission everything through integrated systems testing.
