What Is a Compaction Grouting Program?
Compaction grouting injects stiff, low-mobility grout under pressure to densify loose soils and lift settled structures — the grout bulb grows, compacting the surrounding soil radially without fracturing it. Used for sinkhole remediation, liquefaction mitigation, and foundation underpinning where the structure must stay in place. The program (the engineer's specification) controls the injection to densify without heaving.

How compaction grouting works
Thick grout (low slump — it stays as a growing bulb rather than permeating) injects through cased holes at controlled pressure and volume: the bulb's expansion densifies the surrounding soil (increasing SPT blow counts, reducing settlement potential) and, where intended, lifts the structure above (the grout column bears on competent material below, jacking the settled foundation upward — millimeter-controlled). Staged injection (bottom-up, multiple passes) treats the full depth.
Applications
Sinkhole remediation (filling the raveled zone and densifying the throat — the Florida specialty), liquefaction mitigation (densifying the liquefiable layer beneath existing structures), settled-foundation lifting (the underpinning alternative where excavation is impossible), and void filling (abandoned utilities, karst features). The structure stays occupied during treatment — the low-disruption advantage.
The program specification
The geotechnical engineer specifies: the grout mix (strength, stiffness — matched to the application), hole pattern and staging (the treatment geometry), injection criteria (pressure and volume limits per stage — the heave control), real-time monitoring (ground-surface and structure survey during injection — heave beyond the tolerance stops the injection), and verification (SPT/CPT before and after — the densification proven by testing, not assumed). The operator's skill determines the outcome — qualify the contractor's experience with the specific application.
The bottom line
Compaction grouting densifies loose soils and lifts structures with stiff injected grout bulbs — for sinkholes, liquefaction, and underpinning. Control pressure/volume with heave monitoring; verify by testing.
