What Is a Corbel in Concrete Design?

A corbel is a short concrete bracket projecting from a column or wall to support a beam, girder, or crane rail — the concrete equivalent of a shelf bracket. Corbels carry heavy concentrated loads on short shear spans, which puts them in the deep-beam/strut-and-tie design regime: they fail in diagonal shear, not bending. Precast parking structures and industrial buildings are full of corbels; their design follows ACI 318's specific corbel provisions.

How corbels work

The load sits near the column face (shear span-to-depth ratio under 1.0), so the corbel acts as a truss: a diagonal compression strut from the load to the column, tied by horizontal tension steel at the top. The design checks the strut crushing, the tie yielding, and the bearing stress under the load plate. The horizontal tie steel must be anchored into the column — typically with welded cross bars or 180-degree hooks — because the tie force is the whole mechanism.

Design per ACI 318

ACI 318 Chapter 16 gives the corbel-specific shear-friction and strut-and-tie procedures: minimum depths, reinforcement ratios, and the bearing plate details. The bearing area needs confinement steel (the concrete under a concentrated load crushes without it). Construction joints at the corbel-column interface get shear-friction design. Precast corbels add the connection design — welded plates, grouted joints, and the erection tolerances.

What fails

Corbel failures are diagonal shear cracks from the load point to the column — sudden and brittle. Causes: inadequate tie steel, poor anchorage of the tie into the column, overloading beyond the design (new crane on an old corbel), and corrosion of the bearing plate or reinforcement. Inspect corbels in older industrial buildings: diagonal cracking at corbels is a structural red flag requiring engineering evaluation, not cosmetic patching.

The bottom line

Corbels are short concrete brackets designed by strut-and-tie — the horizontal tie anchored into the column is the critical element. Diagonal cracking at a corbel is a structural emergency, not a cosmetic issue.
