What Is a Dedicated Dehumidification System?

A dedicated dehumidification system controls humidity independently of temperature — the missing piece in buildings where conventional cooling cannot dehumidify without overcooling. Natatoriums (indoor pools), archives, museums, and humid-climate buildings need precise humidity control the thermostat cannot deliver. The MEP engineer designs the dehumidification capacity from the moisture loads (pool evaporation, occupants, infiltration), not the temperature loads.

Why separate dehumidification

Conventional DX cooling dehumidifies only while cooling — at part load (mild humid days, high internal moisture), the thermostat is satisfied but the humidity climbs. The result: clammy buildings, mold, and in natatoriums, structural corrosion. A dedicated system (desiccant wheels, wrap-around heat-pipe dehumidifiers, or dedicated DX with reheat) removes moisture on its own humidistat — temperature and humidity controlled independently, each at its setpoint.

Natatorium design

Indoor pools are the extreme case: pool-surface evaporation (the dominant load — driven by water temperature, air temperature, and air velocity over the surface), spectator and swimmer loads, and the corrosion imperative (chloramine-laden humid air destroys unprotected structure — the dehumidification system protects the building, not just comfort). Design per ASHRAE's natatorium guidance: air changes, supply-air distribution washing the glass and walls (condensation control), and heat recovery (the exhaust air's energy preheats the pool water).

System types

Mechanical dehumidification (DX with hot-gas or condenser reheat — the common commercial solution), desiccant systems (for low-dew-point needs — archives, pharmaceutical), and DOAS-integrated dehumidification (the DOAS handles the latent load for the whole building). Size from the moisture balance (every moisture source quantified); control on space dew point or relative humidity — never on temperature alone.

The bottom line

Dedicated dehumidification controls humidity independently — essential for natatoriums, archives, and humid climates where cooling alone cannot dehumidify. Size from moisture loads; control on humidistat.
