What Is a Ductless Mini-Split System Design?
Ductless mini-splits pair an outdoor compressor with one or more indoor heads connected by refrigerant lines — no ductwork. Each zone gets independent temperature control with inverter-driven efficiency (20+ SEER). The MEP design covers load calculations per zone, head placement, refrigerant line routing, condensate drainage, and electrical. Mini-splits are the default solution for additions, retrofits, and buildings where ducts do not make sense.

System types
Single-zone (one outdoor unit, one head — simple), multi-zone (one outdoor unit, 2-8 heads — fewer outdoor units, shared capacity), and VRF/VRV (the commercial-scale version — dozens of zones, heat recovery between zones). Cold-climate heat pumps (hyper-heat models) operate to -15°F and below — the technology that made mini-splits viable as primary heat in cold regions. Heads: wall-mounted, ceiling cassette, floor-mounted, or concealed ducted.
Design considerations
Manual J load calculation per zone (oversized mini-splits short-cycle — the inverter helps but sizing still matters), head placement for air distribution (wall heads throw air directionally — placement determines comfort), refrigerant line routing (length and lift limits per manufacturer — long runs lose capacity), condensate drainage (every head produces condensate in cooling — gravity drain or pump), and outdoor unit placement (clearances, noise, snow drift in cold climates).
Applications and limits
Additions and ADUs (no duct extension needed), historic buildings (no duct chases carved through plaster), garages and workshops, server rooms (dedicated cooling), and whole-house in mild climates or high-performance envelopes. Limits: one head per room means many heads in compartmentalized houses (cost adds up), wall heads are visible (aesthetic objection), and filtration is basic (no MERV-13 whole-house filtration — add standalone ventilation). Cost: $3,000-$8,000+ per zone installed.
The bottom line
Mini-splits deliver zoned, ductless heating/cooling at 20+ SEER — size per Manual J, route refrigerant within manufacturer limits, drain condensate, and place heads for air distribution.
