What Is a Dynamic Compaction Program?
Dynamic compaction densifies loose granular soils by repeatedly dropping heavy weights (10-40 tons) from heights of 30-100+ feet — the impact energy rearranges the soil particles into denser packing. The program (the engineer's specification) defines the grid, energy, passes, and verification. The simple, dramatic ground improvement for loose fills and granular soils — craters, vibrations, and measurable densification.

How dynamic compaction works
The crane drops the pounder on a grid pattern (typically 10-20 foot spacing); each drop creates a crater and sends compaction energy deep (the depth of influence roughly proportional to the square root of the energy — high-energy drops treat 30+ feet); multiple passes (each pass's craters get filled and re-compacted) achieve the target density. The surface gets proof-rolled or compacted after treatment. Vibration monitoring protects nearby structures — the energy that densifies soil also shakes neighbors.
The program specification
The geotechnical engineer specifies: the test section (a trial area with before/after testing calibrating the energy, grid, and passes — the program is proven before production), the grid pattern and drop energy (from the test results), pass sequencing (the crater-fill cycle), vibration limits (peak particle velocity thresholds for adjacent structures — the monitoring program), and acceptance testing (SPT/CPT after treatment — the densification verified by data, with additional passes where targets are missed).
Applications and limits
Loose granular fills (the classic — uncontrolled fill densified for foundations), landfill and mine-spoil reclamation, liquefaction mitigation (densifying the liquefiable layer), and large-area site preparation (the economy of scale — dynamic compaction is cheapest per square foot at scale). Limits: saturated clays (the impact generates pore pressure without densification — not treatable), high water tables without dewatering, vibration-sensitive neighbors, and buried utilities (locate and protect — the energy finds them).
The bottom line
Dynamic compaction drops heavy weights densifying loose granular soils — specify a test section first, monitor vibrations, and verify with SPT/CPT. Not for saturated clays.
