What Is a Geothermal Heat Pump System?

A geothermal (ground-source) heat pump system heats and cools a building by exchanging heat with the earth through buried loops — the ground stays ~55-70°F year-round, so the system moves heat rather than creating it, reaching efficiencies 3-5x of conventional equipment. The mechanical engineer designs the building side; a geothermal specialist designs the ground loop field, which requires significant land area or deep boreholes.

How the system works

Closed-loop pipes circulate fluid through horizontal trenches, vertical boreholes (150-400 feet deep), or pond loops. In winter the fluid picks up ground heat for the heat pumps; in summer it dumps building heat into the ground. The building side looks like any water-source heat pump system — distributed heat pumps or a central plant. No combustion, no cooling tower, no outdoor condensing units.

Feasibility and cost

The ground loop is the feasibility question: vertical bores need drilling rigs and space for a bore field (roughly one bore per 2-4 tons of cooling), horizontal loops need acres. A test bore with thermal conductivity testing ($5,000-$15,000) confirms the design. Installed costs run $15,000-$35,000 per ton of capacity for the loop field — 2-3x a conventional system upfront, with 30-50% lower operating costs and 25-50 year loop life.

Engineering scope

The MEP engineer sizes the building loads, selects heat pump equipment, and designs distribution; the geothermal designer (often a specialty subconsultant) designs the loop field from the test bore data. Structural coordination covers equipment weights and bore field layout versus foundations and utilities. Incentives — federal tax credits and many state programs — materially improve the payback math; the engineer documents eligibility.

The bottom line

Geothermal heat pumps trade 2-3x upfront cost for 30-50% lower operating costs and decades of loop life. Feasibility hinges on the test bore and available land — start there.
