What Is a Grade Beam Foundation Detail?
A grade beam foundation detail shows the reinforced concrete beam spanning between pile caps or piers at (or near) ground level — the element that ties deep foundations together and carries the wall loads to the piers. The detail specifies the beam's dimensions, reinforcement (top and bottom steel, stirrups), the pier/beam connection, and the void form or compressible material beneath (in expansive soils, the beam must span without bearing on swelling soil). It is the drawing the contractor builds the foundation from.

What the detail shows
Beam cross-section with dimensions, longitudinal reinforcement top and bottom (designed for the span moments between piers plus any soil pressure), stirrup size and spacing (shear and torsion), concrete strength and cover requirements, the connection to the pier or pile cap (dowel embedment, development lengths), and the treatment below the beam — void forms in expansive soils, compacted fill in stable soils. Sections through the beam-pier intersection show the rebar congestion the detail must resolve.
Expansive soil detailing
In expansive clay regions, the critical detail is the void beneath the grade beam: carton void forms (typically 4-6 inches) that collapse as the soil swells, letting the beam span pier-to-pier without the swelling soil lifting it. The detail must show the void form, its protection during concrete placement, and the seal preventing soil or concrete from filling the void. A grade beam poured in contact with expansive soil is a failure waiting for the first wet season.
Common field issues
Void forms crushed before concrete placement (protect them), beam bottoms poured on uncompacted trench bottoms, pier dowels mislocated (the beam detail assumes the dowels land in the beam — verify in the field), and waterproofing/dampproofing of the below-grade beam faces. The special inspector verifies rebar placement, void forms, and concrete cover — the details that determine whether the foundation performs.
The bottom line
Grade beam details specify the spanning beam between piers — reinforcement, connections, and the void form beneath in expansive soils. Protect void forms; verify dowel locations in the field.
