What Is a Micropile Foundation System?
Micropiles are small-diameter (5-12 inch) drilled-and-grouted piles with high-capacity steel cores — developing 100-500+ kips from a pile drilled with compact equipment. The retrofit and restricted-access deep foundation: installed in basements, under existing structures, and on sites where large rigs cannot go. FHWA's micropile guidance governs the design.

How micropiles work
A small drill advances the hole (often with casing through weak soils), a steel core (threaded bar or pipe — the structural element) inserts, and grout fills the annulus (pressure-grouting enhances the bond). Capacity comes primarily from side friction along the grouted bond zone (in soil or rock); the steel core carries the structural load. The small diameter belies the capacity — the grout-to-ground bond in competent material is remarkably strong.
Applications
Foundation underpinning (micropiles installed through existing footings — the retrofit standard), restricted access (basements with 8-foot headroom, interiors, hillsides), seismic retrofits (adding capacity to existing foundations without demolition), transmission towers and infrastructure (remote sites, helicopter-portable equipment), and karst/compressible soils (micropiles punch through the problem zone to bearing). Low vibration and noise — installable in occupied buildings.
Design and verification
The geotechnical engineer designs the bond length from the grout-to-ground bond values (verified by verification load tests — sacrificial test piles loaded to 2x design before production); the structural engineer designs the core for the loads and the pile-to-structure connection (the underpinning bracket or cap detail). Corrosion protection (encapsulated or epoxy-coated cores where aggressive ground) and the testing program (proof tests on production piles) complete the specification. Cost: $100-$300+ per linear foot — the access premium.
The bottom line
Micropiles are small-diameter, high-capacity grouted piles for retrofits and restricted access — 100-500+ kips from compact equipment. Verify with load tests; protect against corrosion.
