What Is Microtunneling vs. Pipe Jacking?

Microtunneling and pipe jacking both install pipelines underground without open trenches — jacking pipe segments from a launch shaft to a reception shaft. Microtunneling uses a remotely operated, laser-guided microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) with slurry spoil removal: precise, for smaller diameters (12-120 inches). Pipe jacking uses the pipe itself as the casing, often with hand or open-face excavation at the cutting head: simpler, for larger diameters and shorter drives. Both avoid surface disruption.

Microtunneling

The MTBM excavates at the face, mixes spoil with slurry, pumps it to the surface for separation, and jacking rigs push the pipe string forward — all remotely operated and laser-guided to millimeter accuracy. Advantages: precision (grade-critical gravity sewers), works below the water table (the slurry balances groundwater pressure), minimal settlement. Disadvantages: specialized contractors, higher cost, limited to the MTBM's diameter range. The geotechnical baseline report is critical — boulders and mixed faces are the MTBM's enemies.

Pipe jacking

Hydraulic jacks push pipe segments through the ground from the launch shaft; excavation happens at the open cutting face (hand mining or mechanical). Advantages: larger diameters possible, simpler equipment, works in stable ground. Disadvantages: less precise than MTBM, dewatering needed below the water table, settlement control depends on the operator's skill at the face. Used for culverts, utility tunnels, and larger gravity sewers in favorable ground.

Design considerations

The geotechnical engineer characterizes the drive (soil, groundwater, obstructions, boulders); the trenchless designer selects the method, designs the shafts (launch and reception — sheet-piled or secant excavations), calculates jacking forces (friction along the drive — intermediate jacking stations for long drives), and specifies settlement monitoring. Utility verification along the alignment is non-negotiable — striking unknown utilities underground is the catastrophic risk. Budget 2-5x open-cut costs for the trenchless premium.

The bottom line

Microtunneling (remote MTBM, precise, slurry-supported) vs. pipe jacking (pipe-as-casing, larger diameters, open face) — both trenchless. Method follows geotechnics; design shafts, jacking forces, and settlement monitoring.
