What Is a Pile Cap Design?
Pile cap design sizes the reinforced concrete block connecting a column to its piles — the element that distributes the column's concentrated load to multiple piles and resists the forces between them. The design uses strut-and-tie modeling (the cap is a D-region where beam theory does not apply): concrete struts carry compression, steel ties carry tension. Pile caps are among the most heavily reinforced elements in a foundation.

Strut-and-tie design
The column load spreads through the cap to the piles along diagonal compression struts; steel ties at the cap's bottom resist the spreading tension. ACI 318 requires strut-and-tie for pile caps (deep-beam behavior): the engineer defines the truss geometry, checks strut crushing, sizes ties for the tension, and details the nodal zones where struts and ties meet. The cap depth is typically set so the strut angle stays within efficient limits.
What the design covers
Cap plan dimensions (pile spacing per code minimums — typically 2.5-3 pile diameters center-to-center, edge distances for the pile-to-cap connection), depth (shear almost always governs over flexure — one-way and punching shear checks around the column and piles), bottom tie steel (the main reinforcement, often multiple layers of large bars), top steel (for uplift or moment), and the pile-to-cap embedment connection (dowels developing the pile into the cap).
Field considerations
Pile locations vary from plan (driving tolerances) — the cap design should accommodate reasonable deviations, and as-driven surveys verify piles land within the cap. Pile cutoff elevations must be consistent (the cap bears on all piles equally). Excavation stability for the cap's depth, dewatering, and concrete placement around dense tie steel (SCC is often specified) complete the construction picture. Inspect tie steel placement — the bottom mat is the cap's structural heart.
The bottom line
Pile caps distribute column loads to piles via strut-and-tie action — shear governs depth, bottom ties carry the spreading tension. Design per ACI 318; verify as-driven pile locations fit the cap.
