What Is a Pile Load Test?
A pile load test proves a deep foundation element can carry its design load by loading it in the field — most commonly a static load test with calibrated jacks reacting against a test frame, measured to thousandths of an inch. It is required by code when pile capacities are based on driving formulas alone, and it is the standard way to verify production piles on major projects. A single test can cost $25,000-$100,000+.

Static vs. dynamic testing
Static load tests apply load incrementally (often to 200% of design load) and measure settlement directly — the gold standard, but slow and expensive, requiring a reaction frame or kentledge. Dynamic testing (PDA — pile driving analyzer) measures strain and acceleration during driving and is far cheaper per pile, making it practical for testing a percentage of production piles. Statnamic sits between the two. Most specs require dynamic testing on 2-5% of piles plus at least one static test on large projects.
When the code requires it
IBC 1705.7 requires load tests where the pile design load exceeds the code's presumptive values or where the geotechnical engineer bases capacity on correlations rather than testing. High-seismic zones, unusual pile types, and projects where the geotechnical report flags uncertainty all push toward testing. The testing program is specified in the geotechnical report and the structural drawings — not decided in the field.
What happens if a pile fails
A failed test does not necessarily mean the foundation concept is wrong — it usually means the pile needs to go deeper, the hammer needs more energy, or the production criteria need tightening. The geotechnical engineer revises the driving criteria or lengths, and testing continues until the required capacity is demonstrated. This is exactly why the test program exists: finding the problem on test piles instead of production piles.
The bottom line
Pile load tests prove deep foundations carry their design load — static tests are the gold standard, dynamic PDA covers production piles. Budget $25,000-$100,000+ for the program and specify it from the geotechnical report.
