What Is a Pressure Grouting Program?

Pressure grouting injects cementitious or chemical grout under pressure into soil or rock — filling voids, sealing water, densifying ground, or lifting settled structures. The program (the engineer's specification) defines the grout mix, injection pressures, patterns, verification, and acceptance criteria. Applications range from dam foundation curtains to slab-jacking settled concrete — the technique varies, the principle is constant: pump engineered fluid into the ground, let it harden into improvement.

Grout types and applications

Cement grouts (curtain grouting under dams — seepage cutoff walls built by overlapping grout columns; compaction grouting densifying loose soils), chemical grouts (polyurethane for water cutoff — expands on contact with water, sealing leaks; sodium silicate and acrylate for fine-soil permeation), and compaction/slab-jacking grouts (lifting settled slabs and foundations — controlled injection raises the structure millimeter by millimeter). Each application has its grout chemistry, pressure regime, and verification method.

The program specification

The geotechnical engineer writes the program: grout mix design (strength, set time, viscosity), hole pattern and sequencing (split-spacing — primary holes, then secondary between them, verifying closure), injection pressures and refusal criteria (pressure or volume limits preventing ground heave), real-time monitoring (pressure, flow, ground movement — heave monitoring with survey during injection), and verification (water-pressure testing of curtain grout, proof testing of densified zones).

Risks and QC

Over-pressuring heaves the ground (or the structure above — the classic grouting failure), grout traveling where uninvited (into utilities, basements, waterways — daylighting), and incomplete treatment (grout following the easy path, leaving zones untreated — the split-spacing sequence addresses this). The grouting contractor's experience matters enormously — this is means-and-methods work where the operator's judgment determines the outcome. Specify the program; qualify the contractor.

The bottom line

Pressure grouting injects engineered grout to seal, densify, or lift — dam curtains, water cutoff, slab-jacking. Specify mixes, pressures, sequencing, and heave monitoring; qualify the contractor.
