What Is Radiant Floor Heating Design?

Radiant floor heating circulates warm water through tubing embedded in the floor slab (or underfloor panels), heating the space by radiation from the floor surface — the most comfortable heating method (warm feet, even temperatures, no drafts, no noise). The MEP engineer designs the tubing layout, water temperatures, zoning, and the boiler or heat-pump plant. It is premium comfort with specific design rules.

How the system is designed

Tubing loops (typically 1/2-inch PEX) at 6-12 inch spacing in the slab or panel system, zoned by room or exposure, circulating 90-140°F water (much cooler than radiators — efficient for heat pumps and condensing boilers). Loop lengths balanced for even flow; manifolds with actuators control each zone. The floor surface stays 75-85°F — comfortable, never hot. Design per the heat-loss calculation: radiant floors cannot exceed the floor's output capacity (~25-40 BTU/sq ft), so the building envelope must be good enough that the load fits.

Slab and control details

Insulation below the slab (heating the ground is waste), edge insulation at the perimeter, tubing secured before the pour (pressure-test the tubing before and during concrete placement — a punctured tube in a slab is a disaster), and floor-covering coordination (carpet insulates against the heat — hard flooring performs best; the covering's R-value enters the design). Controls: outdoor reset (water temperature follows the weather), per-zone thermostats, and slow response accounted for (slabs take hours to change temperature — setback strategies differ from forced air).

Applications and cost

Custom homes (the classic application), bathrooms and kitchens (zone additions), shops and hangars (slab heat is ideal for high-bay spaces), and snow-melt systems (driveways, ramps — same technology outdoors). Cost: $6-$15+ per square foot for the floor system plus the heat plant. The comfort case sells it; the energy case (low water temperatures + heat pumps) closes it.

The bottom line

Radiant floors circulate 90-140°F water through slab tubing — silent, even, premium comfort. Insulate below, pressure-test before the pour, and match floor coverings to the design.
