What Is a Secant Pile Wall?

A secant pile wall is an excavation-support (and often permanent foundation) wall formed by overlapping drilled concrete piles — alternating primary (unreinforced) and secondary (reinforced) piles that interlock like a zipper, creating a continuous watertight wall. Used where groundwater is high, adjacent structures cannot tolerate movement, or the wall becomes the permanent basement wall. The premium excavation-support system for tight urban sites.

How secant walls are built

Primary piles (typically unreinforced or lightly reinforced, lower-strength concrete) are drilled first at spacing less than their diameter; secondary piles then cut into the primaries (the 'secant' overlap — typically 3-6 inches), reinforced with steel cages or beams, and concreted with structural concrete. The overlap creates the continuous, interlocked wall. Guide walls at the surface maintain the alignment — tolerance is critical (a wandering pile breaks the overlap and the watertightness).

Applications

Deep basements in high groundwater (the wall's watertightness eliminates or reduces dewatering), excavations adjacent to sensitive structures (stiff wall, minimal movement — with tiebacks or internal bracing), subway and infrastructure boxes, and sites where the support wall doubles as the permanent structural wall (top-down construction). Hard/soft variants (soft primaries of low-strength concrete, easily cut) versus hard/hard (all structural — the permanent wall).

Design and QC

The geotechnical/structural engineer designs for earth and water pressures (the wall spans between bracing levels or tiebacks), the structural capacity as a permanent wall (where applicable), and the waterproofing strategy (the wall is water-resistant, not waterproof — membranes or crystalline treatments where dry basements are required). QC: verticality monitoring during drilling (the overlap depends on it), concrete records, and pile integrity testing. Cost: 2-4x sheet piling — justified where water and movement control demand it.

The bottom line

Secant pile walls interlock overlapping drilled piles into continuous watertight excavation support — for high groundwater and tight urban sites. Control drilling verticality; design bracing and waterproofing.
