What Is a Self-Centering Braced Frame?

A self-centering braced frame uses post-tensioned tendons to pull the frame back to plumb after an earthquake — combining the energy dissipation of yielding elements with a recentering force that eliminates residual drift. Conventional braced frames survive earthquakes but lean afterward (sometimes requiring demolition); self-centering frames stand straight, ready for occupancy. How self-centering works

Post-tensioned strands run through the frame (along beams or within the bracing); earthquake motion opens gaps at the beam-column interfaces (controlled rocking), the strands stretch elastically, and replaceable energy-dissipating elements (friction devices or yielding plates) absorb the seismic energy. When shaking stops, the strand tension closes the gaps — the frame recenters. Residual drifts under 0.2% (versus 1%+ in conventional frames) mean the building is repairable, not replaceable.

Design components

The engineer designs: the PT force (sized for recentering with margin against the dissipaters' resistance — the recentering ratio must exceed 1.0 or the frame will not return), the energy dissipaters (sized for the damping target, detailed for post-earthquake replacement), the gap-opening interfaces (armored contact surfaces preventing damage during rocking), and the frame's capacity protection (columns and foundations for the PT forces). Research (Stanford, Lehigh, NZ) and emerging code provisions guide the design.

Applications

Buildings where downtime is unacceptable (hospitals, data centers, emergency operations), high-value occupancies (the recentering premium pays back in avoided business interruption), and seismic retrofits (self-centering braces can replace conventional braces in existing frames). The construction premium (specialized connections, PT installation) runs 5-15% over conventional braced frames — the business-continuity case justifies it.

The bottom line

Self-centering braced frames combine PT recentering with replaceable dissipaters — near-zero residual drift after earthquakes. Size PT for a recentering ratio above 1.0.
