What Is a Shear Wall Holdown?

A holdown is a steel connector that anchors the end of a shear wall to the foundation (or to the wall below), resisting the uplift tension created when lateral loads try to overturn the wall. Holdowns are the most critical connection in wood-frame shear wall design — the wall's shear capacity means nothing if the end post lifts off the foundation. Sizing comes from the overturning calculation; installation quality determines whether it works.

How overturning creates uplift

Lateral load on a shear wall creates overturning moment: one end pushes down, the other pulls up. The holdown at the tension end transfers that uplift into the foundation via an anchor bolt (or threaded rod in multi-story applications). The compression end bears directly on the sill plate. The engineer sizes the holdown for the computed uplift plus the dead-load counterweight that resists it.

Types and applications

Bolted holdowns (Simpson HDU series and equivalents) for standard wood shear walls; rod systems running continuously through multiple stories for tall walls where cumulative uplift is large; embedded straps for light applications. In concrete and masonry, the 'holdown' function is served by dowels and vertical reinforcement developed into the footing. Multi-story rod holdowns need shrinkage compensation devices — wood framing shrinks as it dries, and a rigid rod system would lose tension.

Installation and inspection

Holdowns are special-inspection items in higher seismic categories: the inspector verifies the model number matches the plans, the anchor embedment and edge distances, proper bolt torque, and that the end post is the specified lumber (holdowns are rated for specific post sizes). Common field failures: wrong holdown model substituted, anchor bolts mislocated so the holdown cannot be installed, and holdowns installed after the wall is sheathed where nailing cannot be verified.

The bottom line

Holdowns anchor shear wall ends against overturning uplift — the critical connection in the lateral system. Size from overturning calculations, match the model to the plans, and inspect before sheathing.
