What Is a Soil Nail Wall Design?

Soil nail walls stabilize excavations and slopes by inserting passive steel bars (nails) into the ground as the excavation proceeds top-down — the nails, the shotcrete facing, and the reinforced soil mass acting together. The design sizes the nails (length, spacing, capacity) for the internal and external stability, with the facing and drainage completing the system. The economical top-down retention for cuts to 50+ feet.

How soil nailing works

Top-down construction (excavate 3-6 feet, install the nails, shotcrete the face, repeat — the excavation never stands unsupported beyond the short lift), the nails (drilled and grouted steel bars — passive reinforcement mobilized as the ground tries to move; typically 15-40 feet long on 4-6 foot grids), and the facing (the construction shotcrete face, then the permanent CIP or shotcrete facing — the architectural finish). The reinforced block (the nailed soil mass acting as the gravity structure).

Design analysis

Internal stability (the nail tensile capacity and the pullout resistance — the slip surfaces analyzed; the nails sized for the maximum tension and the head loads), external stability (the reinforced block — sliding, overturning, bearing, global stability), and the facing design (the punching shear at the nail heads, the flexure between nails — the facing is the structural element the eye sees). FHWA's soil-nailing manual (the design standard) with the LRFD framework.

Ground conditions and limits

Suitable ground (stiff clays, dense sands, weathered rock — the ground that stands for the short lift; the nails developing the pullout resistance), unsuitable (clean loose sands below water, soft clays — the ground that won't stand or grip), the right-of-way (the nails extending beyond the excavation — the easements for the off-site nails), and corrosion (the encapsulated nails for the permanent walls — the 75-100 year design life). Verification: the pullout testing (the sacrificial test nails proving the bond), the nail installation records, the facing inspection. Cost: $40-$90+/sq ft of face.

The bottom line

Soil nail walls reinforce excavations top-down with grouted steel nails — design internal/external stability per FHWA, verify with pullout tests, and secure easements for off-site nails.
