What Is Fiber-Reinforced Concrete?

Fiber-reinforced concrete adds discrete fibers — steel, synthetic (polypropylene), glass, or natural — to the mix, improving toughness, crack resistance, and impact performance. Micro-synthetic fibers control plastic shrinkage cracking; macro fibers (steel or synthetic) provide post-crack load capacity that can partially replace conventional reinforcement in slabs. It is not a wholesale rebar replacement — it is a performance upgrade for specific applications.

Fiber types and functions

Micro-synthetic fibers (monofilament polypropylene): control plastic shrinkage cracking in slabs — cheap insurance, no structural credit. Macro-synthetic fibers: provide post-crack toughness for slabs on grade, shotcrete, and precast — can replace temperature/shrinkage steel and sometimes structural reinforcement per ACI 544. Steel fibers: the heavy-duty option for industrial floors, tunnel linings, and blast resistance — highest post-crack performance. Glass fibers: architectural GFRC panels.

Where it is used

Industrial slabs on grade (steel or macro-synthetic fibers replacing welded wire fabric — better crack control, faster construction), shotcrete tunnel linings and slope stabilization, precast elements, and overlays. The dosage matters: 3-8 lbs/cy for micro-synthetics (shrinkage control), 40-80+ lbs/cy for steel fibers (structural). The engineer specifies the fiber type, dosage, and the performance criteria (residual strength per ASTM C1609).

Design and specification

Fiber-reinforced concrete is designed per ACI 544: the fibers' post-crack residual strength is tested (beam tests) and used in the design. It does not replace primary structural reinforcement in beams and columns — the code limits are clear. For slabs on grade, macro fibers can replace conventional steel with proper design. Require mill certifications for the fibers, batching verification (fibers must disperse, not ball), and the ASTM test data supporting the design values.

The bottom line

Fibers upgrade concrete toughness and crack control — micro-synthetics for shrinkage, macro/steel fibers for structural slab performance per ACI 544. Specify dosage and residual strength; verify dispersion.
