What Is Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Strengthening?

FRP strengthening bonds carbon- or glass-fiber composites to existing concrete (or masonry, steel, timber) to add strength without adding significant weight or section — the surgical retrofit: wrapping columns for confinement, bonding strips to beam soffits for flexure, or anchoring sheets for shear. FRP delivers steel-like tensile strength at a fraction of the weight, installed with hand tools and epoxy. ACI 440.2R governs the design.

How FRP works

The fibers (carbon: 300+ ksi tensile; glass: lower, cheaper) carry tension; the epoxy matrix transfers stress between fibers and bonds the composite to the substrate. Column wrapping confines the concrete (dramatically increasing compressive strength and ductility — the seismic retrofit workhorse). Flexural strips on beam soffits add moment capacity. Shear wraps (U-wraps or full wraps) add shear strength. The composite is only as good as the bond — substrate preparation (concrete surface profile, crack repair, corner rounding) determines success.

Applications

Seismic retrofits (column confinement, joint shear strengthening), load-rating upgrades (bridges and parking structures needing higher capacity), blast and impact hardening, corrosion-damage repair (FRP restores capacity lost to rebar corrosion), and change-of-use strengthening (heavier loads than the original design). Installation is fast and low-disruption — buildings often stay occupied.

Design limits

ACI 440.2R imposes strain limits (the FRP debonds before reaching its full tensile strength — design uses the debonding strain, not the fiber rupture strain), fire-protection requirements (epoxy loses strength above ~150°F — FRP needs fireproofing where ratings apply), and environmental reduction factors (UV, moisture, chemicals). The existing structure must carry the service loads alone — FRP is supplemental, not primary. Inspect the bond (acoustic sounding) after installation.

The bottom line

FRP bonds carbon/glass composites to existing structures for added strength — column confinement, flexural strips, shear wraps per ACI 440.2R. Design for debonding strain; fireproof where ratings apply.
