What Is High-Strength Bolt Pretension?
Pretension is the deliberate clamping force in a high-strength structural bolt — tensioned to ~70% of the bolt's tensile strength, squeezing the connected plies together so load transfers by friction (slip-critical) or the joint behaves rigidly (pretensioned). A 'tight' bolt is not a pretensioned bolt: achieving the specified tension requires calibrated methods (turn-of-nut, twist-off bolts, or direct-tension indicators). Pretension is what makes modern steel connections work.

Why pretension matters
In slip-critical connections (seismic frames, bridges, crane beams), the clamping force creates friction between the plies — the joint resists load without the bolt ever bearing on the hole sides. Lose the pretension (improper installation, relaxation) and the joint slips — in a seismic frame, slip means the connection's stiffness and energy dissipation vanish. In bearing connections, pretension still matters: it prevents joint separation and fatigue.
Installation methods
Turn-of-nut (snug-tighten, then a specified rotation — the classic method, dependent on the starting point being truly snug), twist-off tension-control bolts (the splined end shears at the calibrated tension — visual verification), direct-tension-indicator washers (protrusions compress at the target load — measurable gaps), and calibrated-wrench (torque values, least reliable — friction varies). The RCSC specification governs; the method must match the specification.
Inspection
Pretensioned joints get inspection: routine observation for bearing joints, and for slip-critical joints, verification of the installation method (pre-installation testing of the bolt assemblies, inspection of the turn-of-nut marks or DTI gaps). Faying-surface condition matters enormously for slip-critical joints — the specified surface class (clean mill scale, blast-cleaned, galvanized) must be achieved and protected from contamination. A painted faying surface in a slip-critical joint is a failed connection.
The bottom line
Bolt pretension (~70% of tensile strength) clamps plies for friction or rigidity — installed by turn-of-nut, twist-off, or DTI per RCSC. Slip-critical joints live or die on pretension and faying-surface condition.
