What it calculates
Manual J works room by room through the house's construction: insulation levels, window sizes and directions, air infiltration, duct location, occupancy, and appliances. It produces a heating load and a sensible and latent cooling load — the exact numbers equipment gets selected against.
When it's required
Many jurisdictions and energy codes now require a Manual J (or equivalent load calculation) with the permit submittal for new homes and system replacements. Utility rebate programs often require one too. Even where it is not mandated, reputable contractors perform one before recommending equipment.
J, S, and D work together
Manual J sizes the load; Manual S selects equipment that matches it; Manual D designs the duct system to deliver the air. A proper residential HVAC design runs all three. Skipping straight to equipment selection is how homes end up with oversized units and undersized ducts.
