What Is Soil Compaction Testing?

Soil compaction testing verifies that fill and subgrade soils are dense enough to support construction — most commonly with a nuclear density gauge that measures in-place density in minutes, compared against the lab maximum from a Proctor test. Structural fill under buildings typically must reach 90-95% of maximum dry density. It is the quality-control step that prevents the settlement failures fill soils are famous for.

How it works

The lab Proctor test establishes the soil's maximum achievable density and optimum moisture content. In the field, the technician tests each compacted lift (usually 8-12 inches) with the nuclear gauge or sand-cone method. Results below the specified percentage mean the lift gets reworked — more water or drying, more roller passes — and retested. Testing frequency is specified in the geotechnical report, often one test per lift per area.

Where it is required

Under building pads, retaining wall backfill, trench backfill under pavements, and engineered fill slopes — anywhere the structure depends on the fill. The geotechnical engineer of record typically provides the testing as part of construction observation. Untested fill is assumed to be bad fill: no engineer will certify bearing on fill without compaction records.

What goes wrong

Testing too infrequently (the classic failure — one test for an entire pad), testing the wrong material (imported fill that was never approved), compacting at the wrong moisture (too wet pumps, too dry won't densify), and skipping the lab Proctor for the actual fill soil used. Every one of these shows up years later as settlement. The testing cost ($2,000-$8,000 typical) is trivial next to a foundation repair.

The bottom line

Compaction testing proves fill can support the structure — 90-95% of Proctor maximum, tested per lift. Untested fill is assumed bad; the $2,000-$8,000 testing program prevents six-figure settlement repairs.
