What Is Structural Steel Detailing?
Structural steel detailing is the process of creating shop drawings that show every beam, column, bolt, and weld needed to fabricate and erect a steel structure. It's the critical link between the engineer's design and the steel fabricator's shop.

Design drawings vs shop drawings
The structural engineer produces design drawings showing member sizes, connection forces, and overall geometry. The detailer translates these into shop drawings with exact dimensions, bolt layouts, weld symbols, cut lengths, and piece marks for every component. A single commercial building can generate hundreds of shop drawing sheets.
The approval process
Shop drawings go back to the structural engineer for review and approval before fabrication. The engineer verifies that connections develop the required forces, geometry matches the design intent, and all code requirements are addressed. This submittal cycle typically takes 2-4 weeks and often requires revisions.
BIM and 3D modeling
Modern steel detailing is done in 3D (Tekla, SDS/2), which automatically detects clashes, generates CNC files for fabrication equipment, and produces accurate material lists. 3D detailing has dramatically reduced field fit-up problems, but the model is only as good as the detailer's understanding of the design intent.
The bottom line
Steel detailing translates engineering design into fabrication-ready shop drawings. The engineer's approval of shop drawings is a critical quality checkpoint.
